Are you addicted to sugar? Chocolate, biscuits, cakes, ice-cream, desserts, sugary drinks, the list goes on. Is your addiction out of control? Can you go even a single day without any sugar. Maybe you are a secret sugar eater, sneaking in biscuits while nobody is watching.
So that was me 2 weeks ago and I haven't had any sugar cravings since. I even had a bit of a head cold last week and normally that would have driven me to eating sugary things for comfort, but not only did I resist, I didn't even feel the temptation! I feel so much better and my energy levels are stable. I Haven't been on the scales but my clothes already feel a little looser. So how did I do it?
Well that was me a couple of weeks ago. I just couldn't say no to sugar. Even if I had a nice meal I'd be thinking about what I was going to have for dessert. Always leaving “enough room” for that sweet something! I needed comfort and I had to have my sugar fix. The problem is we have been thoroughly brainwashed into using sugar to satisfy an array of emotions. Do you ever remember your mum saying something like “Eat your dinner or you can't have dessert” and what cup of tea is complete without a biscuit. Plus there's the afternoon chocolate pick me up, it's our reward, our little piece of happiness and our habit.
Eating too much sugar means your body will start to produce more insulin and when this additional insulin enters your bloodstream it will cause your blood sugar (glucose) levels to drop and because your blood sugar levels have dropped you crave even more sugar. Not fair is it!
There are many different ways to try and give up sugar. Trying to give up by going cold turkey can be difficult and can make you feel awful, symptoms include headaches, fatigue, drowsiness, depression, mood swings and disrupted sleep patterns. That doesn't sound like much fun, so I decided to try Hypnotherapy to deal with my problem.
Your emotional (subconscious mind) is a zillion times more powerful than our conscious thinking mind. This is why diets don't work, or at least if they do many people revert back to their old habits and hey presto, the weight goes back on. Willpower is one of the most difficult things to continue with.
What you really need to do is reprogram your mind and that's where Hypnotherapy comes in. Hypnotherapy is a very safe and deeply relaxing experience. It's a bit like the feeling you get between being awake and being asleep. In this state the conscious mind alertness is lowered and the subconscious mind is attentive to everything it is taking in. The subconscious mind is then able to find more grown up, more resourceful ways to fulfil the emotional needs that sugar is currently satisfying. This is how hypnotherapy helped me take back control of my cravings.
For me this only took 1 session, however sugar and chocolate addiction is often associated with stressful lifestyles and a good Hypnotherapist would work with you on relaxation and stress management techniques. Without tackling these issues it would be difficult for the subconscious mind to let go.
