Does the thought of a visiting the Dentist fill you with dread?
Does the mention of the drill or needles gave you that awful sick feeling in the pit of your stomach?
A new study just released in the Journal of Dental Research show that more than 2.4 billion adults across the world have not been treated for tooth decay on permanent teeth. Even worse, that doesn't include an estimated 621 million children who have untreated decay in milk teeth. In some parts of the world this may be due to lack of access to dental treatment, but in the UK there is no excuse and yet over 30% of the population in the UK are estimated to be affected by dental decay according to 2010 statistics. Is fear holding these people back?
Having a fear of dentists can have a serious consequence on your health and inner well-being. Your smile and your breath say so much about you, and play a major part in how confident you feel.
Perhaps you remember a past painful experience. Most of us can recall unpleasant visits to the dentists as children where everything was strange and frightening, and now, just the smell of the dentist can make us feel vulnerable again. A fear of needles is extremely common, and prevents many people getting the treatment they need. Maybe you have scared yourself by listening to horror stories from other people that exaggerate every gory detail for dramatic effect!
For dental phobics, fear and pain become so intrinsically linked with a visit to the dentist, that even the thought of a routine check up fills them with dread. Often appointments are missed, minor dental problems ignored, and before long tooth decay and gum disease run rife. It’s a sad fact that by trying to avoid pain and fear, you are in fact ensuring it. No matter how hard you try to ignore that throbbing tooth, you know in your heart it will not simply go away. Pain is a warning that you ignore at your peril. It may abate for a short while, but you can always be sure of its return if the underlying problem isn’t dealt with. Don’t wait until agony eventually forces you to get treatment so that you repeat the viscous cycle of associating pain and fear with your dentist.
Don’t despair! Whatever is preventing you from feeling relaxed and confident at the dentist can be dealt with. By combining the wonderfully relaxing and calming effects of hypnosis with NLP and cognitive behavioural techniques you will be amazed how quickly you make the change you need so that fear will never hold you back again. Hypnotherapy's powerful desensitisation techniques will help you tackle any phobias and the relaxation and breathing techniques you'll be taught will enable you to greet your dentist with a friendly smile.
At Diane Wynne Hypnotherapy, I understand the devastating effect this fear is having on your life. I suffered in silence for many years, I had a fear of needles which extended into a dental phobia. Hypnotherapy changed all that for me, my fear of needles has gone and I am now able to use self-hypnosis techniques to ensure I feel comfortable throughout any dental treatment.
Imagine how good it will feel to have a healthy, clean mouth, and a smile you can be proud of!
