I used to bite my nails! I'd bite them so much that they would bleed. They were painful, red and inflamed. When there was no nail left, I would start to bite the cuticle and soft tissue around the nails. I'd done this as far back as I could remember, the habit was deeply ingrained. Most of the time I wasn't even aware of what I was doing, I just remember constant nagging from friends and family, telling me to stop. You name it, I'd tried it: wearing gloves, painting on bitter tasting polish, putting stick on nails over the top, but no I'd nibble those off as well. I couldn't ever imagine being free.
Nail Biting or onychophagia is usually associated with childhood but it can carry over to adulthood and become part of your behaviour pattern. It's unhygienic, unsightly, makes you self-conscious and unhappy with yourself. As well as being a gross and annoying habit can increase the risk of contracting illnesses because it spreads germs from nails to the lips and mouth. Last year a 40 year old British man had such a chronic nail biting habit that it lead to him contracting septicaemia. The infection affected his heart triggering a fatal heart attack.
In my case I'd made the conscious decision to stop, but was getting nowhere. I'd no idea why I was doing it, it was always there. It would get worse in times of stress or anxiety. Everything was happening at a subconscious level and because of this, the cure for my nail biting had to take place at a subconscious level too. Hypnotherapy helped me kick the habit completely and I now have strong, healthy nails, I don't feel embarrassed about my hands I feel calm, relaxed and happy. Even more so because I've just had my first ever manicure and I'm dead proud of the results!
